Survival School
53 minutes 2007
This remarkable documentary follows fifteen elite soldiers as they struggle to survive without food or water in one of the harshest environments in the world: the mouth of the Daley River in Australia’s Northern Territory. Each Year NORFORCE, a regiment of the Australian Defence Force, organises an environmental survival course for its most experienced soldiers. The group, a mix of white and Aboriginal men and women, is forced to live off the land. The students are taught modern army survival skills as well as learning about traditional tucker, bush medicine and hunting from Aboriginal instructors and the local Yolngu community. The soldiers endure extraordinary physical and psychological challenges to prepare them for the many dangerous situations their work involves. Mentally and physically it’s an exhausting course and whilst all these men are seasoned soldiers, not all will last the distance.
